Overheard this morning on CNN
Paraphrasing...."The President is the only one with enough resources to fix these problems with the levee and make the city safe again." -a former mayor of New Orleans
My heart goes out to the victims who have perished in the recent hurricane to pass through Gulf Coast. But seriously, former mayor, here's the problem with your levee....it's above the mean elevation of your city meaning that your city is built below sea level!!! Did you not see this coming someday?
I implore anyone to give me one good reason why New Orleans should NOT be allowed to become a modern day Atlantis.

It would be interesting to know what the cost of rebulding the city is going to be versus the cost of relocating every one of its inhabitants somewhere else. We are talking about half a million people here...I have a feeling that rebuilding is still waaay cheaper.
Not to mention the infrastructure in place for the Port of New Orleans, which is arguably much more important econmically in the long run.
Plus for the mere gift of plastic beads, girls will show you their tits and more.
My spouse works for the oil industry and overheard a conversation on this point today...
apparently if you were to zero out the value of every building in New Orleans, the sum is still completely dwarfed by the value of the port and the oil pipeline terminal infrastructure there. Apparently NO occupies turf som valuable for energy in the country that even if we had to fill in the NO bowl with dirt and build the city over again it would still be vastly cheaper than moving the hub...

They should keep it there, because it's just not right to show your tits above sea level.
I'm with Taryn on that one...
Sadly - I do not have a link for this, but I encorage you to read "Control of Nature" by John McPhee.
The Mississippi River has been artificially maintained in its present position due to all the human activity along its banks. There is an enormous dam keeping it from switching its course westward toward the Atchfalya. Each year the river gets higher and higher above the new water course.
This is some serious shit. This is a nice opportunity to move the city. But that is not how things go down. Individuals will make decisions about their lives and companies. I think NO will be back in some form.
Same thing happened after Galveston. That was THE port city. After the Hurricane, everyone moved to Houston and they dredged the channel to make it an inland port.
